Accounts Receivable Days Formula

DSO = (Average Accounts Receivable ÷ Net Credit Sales) × Days in Period

Average Accounts Receivable is calculated by adding beginning and ending accounts receivable and dividing the result by two.

Average A/R = (Beginning A/R + Ending A/R) ÷ 2

How the DSO Calculation Works

Illustrative example:

Beginning accounts receivable = $80,000

Ending accounts receivable = $100,000

Net credit sales = $600,000

Measurement period = 365 days

Average A/R = ($80,000 + $100,000) ÷ 2 = $90,000

DSO = ($90,000 ÷ $600,000) × 365 = 54.75 days

How to Interpret DSO

DSO measures the average number of days associated with collecting credit sales. The result should be evaluated against the business's contractual payment terms, historical performance, customer mix, and industry context.

Lower DSO: Generally indicates that receivables are being converted into cash more quickly.
Higher DSO: May indicate slower collections, longer customer payment terms, billing delays, or changes in customer mix.
Increasing DSO: Monitor accounts receivable aging, overdue invoices, billing processes, and collection activity.
Decreasing DSO: May indicate faster collections or a change in the composition of credit sales.
